Pope John Paul II High School introduced a track and field program in 2018.
We have a track and field program that is relatively new, with official seasons in 2018, 2019, and 2022. However, there was no official outdoor season in 2020 due to COVID-related issues. In 2021, there was a league season that lasted for approximately six weeks. Unfortunately, the district and state meets had to be canceled due to ongoing COVID concerns. Here is a brief overview of each track and field season that has taken place so far.
2018
The Track and Field team performed exceptionally well in their inaugural season. They managed to qualify many athletes for the state championships and had several athletes place in the competition. The boys' team did remarkably well, securing fourth place in their first-ever state track and field championship. As a result, the boys brought home the first state trophy in the school's athletic history.
At our first state championship meet, the following boys placed in their respective events: Caden Deutscher (1600m, 3200m), Kobe Deutscher (800m, 1600m), Jack Farrell (800m, 1600m), and Dmitry Sutton (3200m). Jack (800m, 1600m) and Caden (3200m) both took second place in their events at the state championships.
In 2018, Jack Farrell participated in his first and only track and field season. He performed exceptionally well and became the first JPII athlete in a JPII sport to receive an athletic scholarship to a university. Jack ran for Saint Martin's University. He was the top runner on his cross-country team in 2021.
Molly Zepeda and Holley Nichols achieved success by reaching the podium in their first state track meet on the girl's side. Molly placed in the 100-meter hurdles, while Holley placed in the 1600 meters. These two ladies made history as the first girls from JPII to compete in and place at a state championship athletic event.
2019
In just their second year, the boys' team achieved the second position in the Washington State Championships. Individual state championships were won by Kobe Deutscher (800, 1600), Caden Deutscher (3200), and Tim Sellars (shot put). This made them the first athletes in school history to win state titles in any sport. Brothers Caden and Kobe Deutscher also made history by becoming the first brothers in their state classification to secure 1st and 2nd positions in the 1600 and 3200-meter events.
The girls' team achieved a remarkable 5th position at the state championships, in just their second year of participating. Maggie Larson excelled in the 800 meters event, while Clare Kondrat stood out in the 1600 meters and 3200 meters events. Molly Zepeda showed her versatility by making it to the state podium in four events: 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, triple jump, and long jump. Additionally, the 4x400 meter relay team, comprising Morine Kimani, Isabella Pettis, Holley Nichols, and Maggie Larson, also made it to the podium.
2020
In 2020, due to unforeseen circumstances, there was no official sports season due to the COVID Pandemic. However, Tim Sellars participated in a virtual state competition and managed to break the school record in shot put. Moreover, during the 2020 virtual season, Tim's shot put throw was considerably farther than the existing state record.
2021
The JPII boys and girls teams emerged victorious at the Sea-Tac League Track & Field Championships. They were the favorites to win the state championships as they had been leading the state in numerous individual events. However, the district and state meets were canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. Despite this setback, Kobe Deutscher, Joshua Braun, and Clare Kondrat were still named Washington State Track and Field athletes of the year in their respective state classification. JPII won three out of four statewide track and field athlete of the year awards in 2021.
2022
The JPII Girls team won the Washington State Track and Field Championship in 2022! It was the first state championship in the short history of school track and field. The boy's team placed third at the State Championships! Trevor Dugo led the Eagles by winning the 1600 and 3200 meters at state and finishing second in the 800 meters. Vivi Kondrat won the 3200 meters, placed second in the 1600 meters, and 4th in the 800 meters to lead the lady Eagles.

I am still compiling the number of individual podium places in track and field for historical purposes. However, this post serves as a start to keep our history alive.
The track and field program is still very new. I will do my best to update this document as long as I am a coach at JPII.
Pandemic Years Of 2020 And 2021
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the great heart of the track and field teams during the pandemic. Although the team had a great attitude during the pandemic and took things in stride, much was lost.
I don’t want to marginalize what these excellent teams accomplished. They continued to train and never gave up on their goals. No doubt, several individual and state team championships were potentially lost in 2020 and 2021.
Both Eagle's track & field teams were one of the favorites to win state titles in 2020 and 2021 in track and field, but the state meet was canceled. JPII Track and Field athletes led the state in their events more than any other team in 2021.
I
bring these accomplishments up to recognize our student-athletes fantastic work, even knowing a state meet would not happen.
The Pandemic teams showed heart, determination, and grit, absolutely knowing there would be no final exam for them to show how hard they worked.
I will never forget the 2020 and 2021 teams. These were some of the greatest teams I’ve ever coached, maybe the greatest of all, because of their incredible character in the most significant societal challenge in generations.
The JPII Pandemic teams never gave up. They became role models for us adults about how to handle adversity.

State Shot Put Champion Tim Sellars
Tim's shot put throw in 2020 is the furthest throw in his classification in Washington State History. Unfortunately, there was no state championship in 2020, so it is not the official record. It is still the longest throw ever by a 1B athlete which is the smallest athletic classification in Washington.
